Midwestern Invitational Softball Tourney comes to Cleveland

The players are coming! The players are coming! They are the softball players who are coming to Cleveland to participate in the Midwestern Invitational Softball Tournament, MIST, during Labor Day weekend. The players will be on softball teams from Columbus, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and other areas. The representation should be very interesting.

With representatives of several area gay and lesbian communities visiting Cleveland during this special weekend, from August 30 through September 2, we want our guests to have a very pleasant experience and impression of our hometown. Therefore, a committee of volunteers headed by experienced MIST chairperson Nick Nichols, has been meeting for several months to make preparations. However, many more volunteers are needed to become an important part of this special

event.

All people in the Northeastern Ohio gay and lesbian community are invited to participate in MIST by volunteering to spend time on duty at a MIST table at Dancin' In The Streets, prepare welcome packets of information about our area, organize private housing for visiting players who may not be able to stay at the host hotel, Holiday Inn Lakeside in downtown Cleveland, and meet with the existing committee members to discuss and make other plans.

A highlight that is already scheduled for the MIST players and all the people of our area who wish to show our special kind of hospitality to the players is the cruise on

the new Goodtime III boat. Tickets for that fun opportunity to mingle with these hot athletes... and many of your friends are now on sale for $15 per person. Capacity is limited for the Sunday evening, September 1st, sailing, so be sure to buy your ticket soon and ensure your part in this event.

Of course, the major activity of MIST is the competition of these skilled gay and lesbian softball players as their teams go head to head, so to speak, on the wellgroomed softball fields in Brookside Metropolitan Park, which is located just south of Interstate 71 and just west of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo at what would be approximately West 50th Street in Cleveland. Those fully manicured softball fields named Rose and Elder are being used for the first time this year by the Northcoast Athletic Association for the Cleveland Softball League's regular Sunday afternoon games.

You could visit the fields during the summer season and find all you could want in comfortable bleachers for seating, restrooms and refreshment stands, as well as sweating athletes glistening in the summer sun. What a wonderful way to spend some time between 2 pm and 7 pm on a Sunday afternoon. Cheer on our local players and prepare yourself for the challenge from the visiting teams of MIST.

You will also be able to show your pride in Cleveland's hosting of this well-known gay and lesbian tournament by purchasing a brightly colored MIST logo T-shirt. Funds from the sale of these shirts go

toward covering the various expenses involved in carrying off such a function. Of course, individual and corporate sponsors are also needed and welcome to help in meeting these expenses. If you can help on that score as well as perhaps keeping score at the tournament games, please

contact MIST Chairperson Nick Nichols, at 961-5409, or write to 5102 Herman Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44102. Cruise tickets and T-shirts may also be ordered through these numbers. See you at the field.▼

Ladies' Touch Football is now in their fourth year

Cleveland's West Side has had a women's touch football league for the last four years. Four of the seasons have been in the spring, and two have been in the fall. The league, however, will continue to play fall season only.

The league name is Ladies' Touch Football, and is organized and managed by a small coalition of players under the direction of league founder and head referee Cindy Pizzino.

After playing tackle football for several years, Pizzino sought a "softer" form of active team recreation. She was approached to form a women's flag or touch football team affiliated with the U.S. Touch Football League. The USTFL rules still had too much contact and roughness to attract enough women to play football. Pizzino advocated a change to Canadian Women's Touch Football League rules which allow much less contact and rely more on speed, skill, and strategy.

The Ladies' Touch league began with only three teams playing an adapted form of USFTL rules, and has since grown to five teams playing the Canadian rules. They went to Columbus and formed a Columbus league in 1990 to compete citywide. Expecting to start the fall season with six or seven teams, the league playson Sunday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m., in a season that is about eight weeks long.

The purpose of the league is to have fun playing football and to be good-natured athletes with respect and consideration for others. Consequently, rules concerning profanity, unnecessary roughness, and fair play are strictly enforced. Fun and football are what they are all about and the camaraderie among them is responsible for their continual growth. The goal of Ladies' Touch is to represent those women who can combine fun, skill, and knowledge successfully in a competitive sport without internal turmoil.
